Politicians Owning What they Do
Changing the Phrase "Learning Disabilities" to Learning Differences
For a couple years now, I have made it my life goal to change what is the dreaded phrase for a lot of people of “learning disabilities,” which is 1 in 5 in America to “learning differences.” Why? Because people with “learning disabilities” simply just learn differently; and I don’t know why it’s so hard for politicians to change that. Their excuse is because nonprofits have to have the word disabilities in their name in order to get money. However they are not helping people with disabilities, unless that person with a disability has a learning difference, they are helping people who learn differently. In fact, there are some politicians and ones in congress and in the senate who learn differently themselves. So it really should not be difficult to write a new bill to change the phrase from “learning disabilities” to “learning differences.” Changing this phrase will also help the self-esteem of especially young adults who are labeled by the doctors when young adults are given that diagnosis; especially in the grave times that we are living in today. And one more thing… it’s not something that you ever grow out of.
Some people seem to be getting more lethargic, especially when it comes to diagnosing people and prescribing them pills for their pain no matter what it is. Sometimes I reminisce back when I was at the Gow School, a now coed boarding school for people with learning differences, not learning disabilities in Buffalo, New York. I remember when I was given the prescription pill for Ritalin: a pill that is supposed to help your ADD or ADHD, and by the way, another big pet peeve of mine is when people call it and especially doctors label a young adult or an adult with ADD/ADHD. Anything that you can differentiate then you should coincide with each other. ADD is Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD is Attention Deficit “Hyperactivity” Disorder. Anyways, they prescribed me Ritalin for my ADD, not my ADHD and that only worked for about a year or so. Then I took a drug called Dexedrine. I actually just looked it up to see how it’s spelled and the first thing that came was the definition of it if you will: “This medication is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - ADHD.” This is according to WebMD. I was taking a pill for something that I don’t even have. The only two things that this pill did for me was to hand me the cards of extreme dry mouth and keep me up all night long almost.
People need to take their time to diagnose people and prescribe them medication properly, because if they don’t, there may be severe consequences. A task that I have recently made my life long goal is to become the first Representative because there isn’t really any office with that title. I think if I was to become the first Representative for People with Learning Differences, it would have to be for people with Learning Disabilities and that would be the first thing that I would change is that smelly phrase that has such a bad odor for me. The following people I have interviewed, which you can go on to FriendsOfQuinn to see the videos, and they have all agreed with me, that it is time for the phrase “Learning Disabilities” to be changed to “Learning Differences:” One of the is Dr. Anthony Fauci.
