Over the years I’ve had the honor of interviewing many interesting and important people, and last week I sat down with the Mayor of NYC, Eric Adams. Out of all the interviews that I have done, his might just be the most interesting. I have never interviewed a dyslexic, former gang member that went on to become the mayor of one of the biggest cities in the world, and it was remarkable to hear his story. Adams began his political career after many years as a police officer. The first office he held started in 2006 (after retiring at the rank of captain from the NYPD) as a state senator representing the 20th district in Brooklyn. In 2013 he was elected as the 18th Borough President of Brooklyn, where he served until becoming mayor in 2022.
Mayor Adams reminded me a lot of my father because my dad had a similar swagger to the mayor’s, so I asked the mayor about his parents. I’d noticed in a 60 Minutes interview that Adams did not mention anything about his father when asked, only his mother, so I wanted to see if he would add anything. Again, he only spoke about his mother and I did not want to pry so I did not ask anything further. His mother was obviously a very important part of his support system. I like Adams a lot because he has overcome so much; he did not let his background, his skin color, or his dyslexia stop him from becoming what he wanted to become. He is a wonderful example of how we can all do what we want to no matter what differences way may have. If you put your effort into your dream, your dream will put effort into you.
