Dyslexia in the British Parliament
I recently came across a British article written by Roger Broadbent, who has dyslexia himself. He interviewed four MPs or Members of Parliament who have dyslexia - Tom Hunt, Sir Mike Penning, Peter Kyle, and Matt Hancock. Across the pond, as the Brits say, dyslexia is still a bit of taboo, which to me funny, because Europe is so much more advanced than America in so many ways; but at the same time, they also live in the past even though they are six hours ahead of us, haha. Sir Mike Penning said he was “horrendous at school… I was always scraping and getting the cane,” and also said that he “didn’t know what was going on.” Matt Hancock said, “I kept my dyslexia private for 20 years, across my career in business and as a politician.” However, when he spoke about it for the first time, he said, “It was a huge relief for me.” Mike ended up becoming the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, the Minister for the Cabinet Office Paymaster General, and a Member of Parliament for West Suffolk. Tom Hunt couldn’t tie his shoes until he was fourteen when he found out that he had dyspraxia along with dyslexia. Still, he graduated from the University of Manchester and obtained a Master's from Oxford University. This is why I founded InqludedU.com.
