Child Mind Institute
The Child Mind Institute helps to transform children’s mental health through care, science, and education. According to The Child Mind Institute Foundation, they are “the leading independent nonprofit in children’s mental health, operating three Mission Areas that work together for greater impact: Care, Education, and Science”. They have a clinical team of 12 people: 3 people with Medical Degrees, five people with PhDs, and five with psychology degrees. There are also videos on the website that explain feelings, what they are, and how we should act when we feel them. These videos are not just an expert explaining; they explain what it’s like “Having Big Feelings” and “Being a Good Friend” by telling stories using Hedge Hogs. The Child Mind Institute was co-founded by Brook Garber Neidich and Debra G. Perelman, and they are located in San Francisco. It’s great that there are websites out there that are now geared toward children ‘s mental well-being and not just adults because children need our help.
As a step-parent with a syndrome, this website is useful to me because there is a list of 12 tips on how to raise your child. Again, I am a step-parent, but this list could be good for any parents, not just parents or step-parents with syndromes. These are the tips in order:
1.) Model confidence in yourself.
2.) Don’t get upset about mistakes.
3.) Encourage them to try new things.
4.) Allow kids to fail.
5.) Praise perseverance,
6.) Help kids find their passion.
7.) Set goals.
8.) Celebrate effort.
9.) Expect them to pitch in.
10.) Embrace imperfection.
11.) Set them up for success.
12.) Show your love.
As somebody who has almost come close to death and has experienced death, I can relate to all those parents and especially mothers out there who are having a hard time letting their children fail, but failure is the greatest teacher and lesson to learn. You have to let your children fail. I now see myself doing just that and find that it’s hard not to always tell my stepdaughter what to do and what not to do, so now I just mostly let my wife handle just about everything. But that doesn’t mean that I will never be there for Khloe when she needs me.
